Abstract

Loura Dialect is one of the variations of Wewewa or Weyewa language. Some linguistic works (Asplund, 2010; Budasi, 2007) concluded that the language used by the people of Loura was not a language but a variation of Wewewa language. In this study, hereinafter it is called bahasa Wewewa dialect Loura (BWDL) ‘Loura dialect of Wewewa’. Wewewa itself is an Austronesian language, member of Sumba-Hawu subgroup of Central-Eastern Malayo-Polinesian branch. The dialect is spoken by about 12,000 Loura people in Loura area which lies in the northwestern part of Sumba Island, NTT Province, Indonesia. While several linguistic works have been done in other Sumba languages including Wewewa proper dialects, BWDL receives very little attention in the literature. This undergraduate thesis focuses on the discussion of the morphological and syntactical properties of noun in Loura dialect. Specifically, this research discusses about nouns and its relation to morphosyntactic properties (distributional and structural properties). Descriptive method is employed in describing the morphosyntactic properties of nouns in BWDL. The description was made objectively based on the dataset collected by the researcher from the BWDL native speakers. The dataset which this thesis uses is sourced from list of nouns, list of phrases and simple sentences, several transcripts of recording monologues. The dataset is annotated. This study also harnessed the support from four native speakers of Loura dialect who assisted in maintaining the integrity of the data and examples, in terms of double-checking, testing, and judgment of (un)acceptability. All of them speak BWDL as their first language. There are three categories of nouns found in BWDL. They are countable nouns, uncontouble nouns, and proper names. The distinction between countable dan uncountable noun are marked by the classifer. There are two categories of BWDL classifiers (CLS), classifier for countable nouns (walla ‘a sheet of (single)’, balla ‘a sheet of (plural)’, bolo ‘a CLS for livestock (i.e., horse, pigs)’, bu’u ‘a CLS for wood’, dan gazu ‘a CLS for light and heavy knife’) and classifier for the uncontable nouns (kaboka ‘a bundle’, ‘gherre ‘a bunch of’, ‘mbulli ‘a cluster of’. In addition to syntactic properties, the BWDL sintax rules always place nouns (free noun phrase) pre/postverbally.
